27/01/2010 - Staying the Course
New report on the experiences of disabled students of English and Creative Writing launched by the Higher Education Academy's English Subject Centre
With the help of HEAT funding, JISC TechDis supported a survey in 2009, carried out by the Higher Education Academy's English Subject Centre, based at the University of London (Royal Holloway). Their report, called Staying the Course, highlights the experiences of disabled students of English and Creative Writing and is illustrated throughout by vivid quotations in the students' own words.
The report covers key topics such as independent study, lectures and seminars, exams and course management, complemented by advice to lecturers - both on measures which will help all students, disabled or not, and on adjustments to accommodate particular individuals.
The report also includes a checklist of ten relatively straightforward measures recommended for implementation at departmental level and concise information about the conditions categorised under UCAS disability codes.
