The fifth annual Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) STAR Awards - the Oscars of the further education sector - were held in London on 24 November.
The awards recognise the dedication and expertise of the people who, on a daily basis, make a significant contribution to improving the skill levels of young people and adult learners. The winners were honoured at a ceremony at Old Billingsgate in London, which was attended by over 500 further education staff and learners from across England.
This year the LSIS STAR Awards received a record number of nominations - over 2,500 - demonstrating the high regard in which they are held by further education professionals and learners alike.
This year's ceremony also marked the inauguration of the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS), the sector-owned body set up to support those working in the further education sector.
Helen Sexton, Chief Executive and Principal (National Star College) won the Lifetime Achievement award sponsored by DIUS.
Kathryn Rudd, Deputy Principal, who nominated Helen, said,
“Helen’s drive for improved standards and outcomes combined with a culture of respect has led to outstanding results. Helen passionately champions disabled learners and staff and her groundbreaking thinking is demonstrated by the College’s innovative work resulting in AoC Beacon Awards for Leadership, Art and Design and most recently receiving BECTA/LSC Technology Exemplar Status, for cutting edge work around enabling technologies. Helen is always looking to the future and for our learners, staff and disabled people she has made the College a much better place to live, work and learn.”
