04/11/2008 - Computer games technology applied to stroke victim rehabilitation
A team at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University, is investigating the use of motion sensors to monitor improvements in upper body movement for patients undergoing physiotherapy.
In the early stages of recovery there are often few perceptible signs of improvement, which can be disheartening for patients. The team hope that the technology will monitor smaller changes, providing encouragement for patients to persevere with their exercise regimes. The researchers plan to develop a version of the technology that will allow patients to use it at home.
The technology is similar to the motion-sensing technology used by the Nintendo Wii games console - for more information about the Nintendo Wii see the HEAT 2 project [INTERNALLINK=1273]Evaluating the accessibility of the Nintendo Wii and its use in an educational context[/INTERNALLINK].
