03/10/2008 - HEAT Scheme projects nominated for Awards!

Three projects are nominated for the Handheld Learning Awards while another is up for a Times Higher Award.

Congratulations to Alasdair Thin, Heriot-Watt University; Andy Pulman, Bournemouth University; and Sarah Davies and Jessica Bartlett, Open University, whose projects, all supported by the JISC TechDis HEAT scheme, have swept the board for nominations in the Special Needs - Innovation category at this year's Handheld Learning Awards

Alasdair's project looked at the use of a mobile phone to stream context-specific audio information to students with visual impairment , Andy's examined the potential of handheld gaming devices as effective assistive technology tools , while Sarah and Jessica's team used mobile devices to explore how remote fieldworking can be used to enable students with and without mobility problems to work together to carry out fieldwork.

Congratulations also to the Disability Assist team at Plymouth University, led by Judith Waterfield, for their nomination for the Times Higher Award for Supporting Students with Disabilities.

I am delighted that their JISC TechDis HEAT project has been singled out for mention, albeit as one small part of the immense body of work Disability Assist have achieved at Plymouth over the years. I am thrilled Judith and the team have received this nomination - fingers crossed for Awards night!

Judith's HEAT project was a collaboration with Deirdre Ford in Plymouth's Faculty of Health and Social Work and looked at the use of Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) by undergraduate students with dyslexia and other learning difficulties who are undertaking professional placement learning.
